Geoff is multi-disciplinary
artist who works with media that includes light, sound, photography and
video and often shows his work as installations. He graduated from the
University of Derby in 1997 with an Mphil that explores digital
montage.
His professional practice has seen him teach photography and new media
at a range of universities including the University of Auckland, New Zealand,
and he has taken part in several high-profile artist residencies. He was
the first Digital Artist in Residence
at VR and Innovation Centre, Teesside in 1998, and was the Durham Cathedral
Artist in Residence for 2000-2001.
In 2001 he became increasingly interested in exploring participatory practice
and became artist in residence at Jubliee
Arts/The Public, in West Bromwich. He formally joined The Public as
an Artist Mentor in 2002, a role that included project development and
management, and organisational development. As part of this role he worked
closely with artist and writer Brendan
Jackson in the development and realisation of a wide range of artists
commissions, including The
Wonders 2003-2005.
Since 2005 Geoff has worked independently to pursue his own ideas and
practice, and occasionally collaborates with other artists and organisations.
This has recently included Sean Clark,
Modulate, Wildworks Theatre
and Creative Partnerships.
A common theme in much of his recent artwork is the re-articulation of
perceptions of everyday life that have been recorded with a wide range
of participants. The most recent project in this family of work is Small
Wonder that investigates individuals’ relationship to spirituality,
and was produced in the Highlands of Scotland in Autumn 2007. Related
projects have centred around themes such as the meaning
of life, love and belonging.
