flow
Geoff Broadway / Sean Clark

August 2000

flow explores elements of personal change and transformation through a continued interest in the creative possibilities of the oral-history document and experimental moving image and sound techniques.

The central element of flow is spoken individual testimonies of invited participants who reflect upon transforming moments of their lives. These very personal but also everyday moments allow the viewer the possibility of having empathic identification with these people as their experiences and thoughts pass through and fill the installation space.

flow was commission by Derby-based Q-Arts to produce a work which would in part respond to its new exhibition venue, Q-Gallery, formerly the entrance to city’s central swimming pool.

flow consists of an 8 ft diameter X 8 inch deep circular pool of water through which a video image is projected onto a reflective surface. The pool is surrounded by 8 suspended speakers which hang at between 5-6 ft from the floor.
Verbal contributions from invited participants were combined with electronically generated and environmental sampled sounds which is output as a 65 minute sound loop, played through the suspended speaker system.
Anonymous shoppers and passersby in central Derby were captured on video, slowed down, and interleaved with various abstracted water-based images and then projected through the circular pool of water.
